four A-1H Skyraiders from VA-176 aboard USS Intrepid were sent to
provide protection for a helicopter rescue mission deep inside North
Vietnam. Instead they met four MiG-17s but using tree top maneuvers
and their agility the Skyraiders managed to damage two MiGs. Ltjg W.
Patton found himself in good position behind another MiG that had
made some maneuvers and bled off his speed and making him
vulnerable. Patton fired the last of his 20mm ammo and downed the
MiG-17. VA-176 flew the Douglas AD-6 / A-1H Skyraider
(designation changed from AD-6 to A-1H in 1962) from June 1955 until
February 5, 1969 when they were replaced by the Grumman A-6A
Intruder.

Fleet” originally started out as VT-17 in 1943 flying TBF/TBM’s. In
November
1946 VT-17 became VA-6B flying the SB2C Helldiver and eventually
AD-1 Skyraiders. Next the squadron became part of Air Group Six as
VA-65 in April 1948 and in 1950 moved to the West Coast of the U.S.
as part of Air Group Two. During their time there they made 3
deployments during the Korean War. In July 1959 as part of a number
swap with an East Coast squadron in Air Group Six VA-65 became
VA-25. Throughout the 1960’s VA-25 made three carrier deployments to
Vietnam flying over 3,000 combat missions and dropping ten million
pounds of ordnance on the enemy. In 1968 the Spads were retired in
favor of the A-7 Corsair making the Skyraiders from VA-25 the last
of the USN’s tactical propeller driven aircraft.

Aircraft 52-142014 has the 602nd Special Operations Squadron (SOS)
Commander’s four stripes around the fuselage, if it had 5 stripes it
would be the Wing Commander’s. The 56th Special Operations Wing
(SOW) was formed in March 1967 with its mission to assist U.S.
unconventional forces and U.S. friendly foreign government military
forces throughout Indochina. The 602nd Special Operations Squadron
(SOS) was assigned to the 56th SOW to provide armed escort for SAR
operations or armed reconnaissance. They also provided escort for
helicopters inserting or extracting Special Operations personnel
from Laos and North Vietnam. For three years the 602nd
used TT as their tail letters and the call sign Firefly or Sandy for
helicopter SAR escort.

HA0162 SBD-5 Flotille 4.F, French Navy In 1944 the French
Naval Aviation (Aeronautique Navale) received 32 SBD-5s for 2
squadrons (flotilles) 3FB and 4FB. The aircraft retained
standard USN colors with added French markings. In
April 1945 each SBD-5 averaged 3
missions a day in the European
theater.
In 1946 4FB became 4F and was
assigned to the former Royal
Navy
aircraft carrier Colossus now named
Arromanches. In late 1947 during
one
operation in the Indo-China War 4F
flew 200 missions and dropped

ABOUT THE XIV SPITFIRE
The Mk XIV differed from
the Mk XII in that the longer, two-stage supercharged Griffon 65,
producing 2,050 hp (1,528 kW), was mounted 10 inches (25.4 cm) further
forward: the top section of the engine bulkhead was angled forward,
creating a distinctive change of angle to the upper cowling's rear edge.
A new five bladed Rotol propeller of 10 ft 5 in in diameter was
used, although one prototype JF321 was fitted with a six bladed
contra rotating unit.
The cowling fasteners were new, flush fitting "Amal" type, and there
were more of them.
The oil tank (which had been moved from the lower cowling location
of the Merlin engine variants to forward of the fuselage fuel tanks) was
increased in capacity from 6 to 10 gallons.
The Mk XIV adopted the twin radiator arrangement of the two stage
Merlin variants, although the increased heat generated meant
that all radiators were much bigger and the underwing housings were
deeper than previous versions.
The "fishtail" design of exhaust stub gave way to ones of circular
section.
To help balance the new engine the radio equipment was moved further
back in the rear fuselage and the access hatch was moved from
the left fuselage side to the right.
A new tail unit, with a taller, broader fin and a rudder of
increased area was adopted.
The aerial mast was removed and replaced by a "whip" aerial further
aft on the fuselage spine.

SPITFIRE WING TYPES
A type: The original wing
design, the basic structure of which was unchanged until the C
type in 1942. The one major alteration made to this wing, soon
after production started was the incorporation of heating for
the gun bays: open structures around the gun-bays were blocked
off. Ducting, drawing hot air from the back of the radiators,
was added to the wings. The heated air was exhausted through
underwing vents, covered by streamlined triangular blisters,
just inboard of the wingtips. Towards the end of 1940 the fabric
covered ailerons were replaced by ones covered in light-alloy.
The only armament able to be carried was eight
.303 inch
Browning machine guns with 300 rpg.
B type: This was the A
type modified to carry a 20mm Hispano cannon. The retractable
underwing landing lamp was repositioned and the innermost m.g
bays were replaced with a single cannon bay, plus a compartment
for the drum magazine outboard of the wheel well. The upper and
lower wing skins incorporated blisters to clear the ammunition
drum. Under the wings there were two possible blister shapes.
The alloy covered ailerons were standardised on this wing type.
One type of armament could be fitted:
Two 20 mm
Hispano Mk II cannon, drum magazines with 60
rounds/gun.
Four .303 Browning mgs with 350
rounds/gun.
C type: "Universal wing".
The wing was structurally modified to reduce labour and
manufacturing time plus allowing mixed armament options; A type,
B type, or four 20 mm Hispano cannon.
The undercarriage mountings were redesigned and
the undercarriage doors were bowed in cross section allowing the
legs to sit lower in the wells, eliminating the upper-wing
blisters over the wheel wells and landing gear pivot points.
The stronger undercarriage legs were raked 2
inches (5.08 cm) forward, making the Spitfire more stable on the
ground and reducing the likelihood of the aircraft tipping onto
it's nose.
The Hispano Mk IIs fitted in all cases were now
belt fed from box magazines allowing for 120 rounds each (the "Chattellerault"
system). The fairings over the Hispano barrels were shorter and
there was usually a short rubber stub covering the outer cannon
port.
The redesigned upper wing gun bay doors
incorporated blisters to clear the cannon feed motors, and the
lower wings no longer had the gun-bay heating vents outboard of
the gunbays.
The inner machine gun bays were moved outboard
to between ribs 13 and 14.
The retractable landing lights were no longer
fitted.
There were strong-points added outboard of the
wheel-wells capable of taking a 250 lb (113 kg) bomb under each
wing.
Several versions of the Spitfire, starting with
the H.F Mk VIIs had extra 14.5 imp gallon integral fuel tanks
added to the wing leading edges between the wing-root and the
inboard cannon bay.
In practice, most aircraft carried the two 20mm Hispano IIs with
120 rpg and 4 .303 Browning mgs with 350 rpg. Several Spitfire
Vcs which were transported to Malta were initially fitted with
four Hispanos, although they soon reverted to the standard B
type configuration.
D type: unarmed long-range
wing for reconnaissance versions with the D shaped wing
structure ahead of the main spar converted to integral fuel
tanks capable of carrying 66 Imperial gallons (300 liters)
Starting with the Mk V some Spitfires had their rounded wingtips
replaced by shorter, squared off fairings to improve
low-altitude performance and enhance the roll rate.
These are sometimes referred to as "L.F" versions, e.g.
L.F.Vb. This designation referred to the low-altitude version of
the
Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and while many "L.F" Spitfires had
the "clipped"
wings, a number did not.
E type: The “e” wing was a further
development of the Universal. It could carry either four 20mm
cannon or two 20mm cannon and two 0.5in Browning machine guns.
This time the cannon took the outer position and the machine guns the inner. This was partly
because it gave more room for machine gun ammunition and partly
because the bombs were carried below the inner gun positions,
and there had been some problems reported when both cannon and
bombs were on the same part of the wing. The “e” wing appeared
in the second half of 1944. Low altitude attack and Photo versions had clipped
wings.
MK 21/24: The wing used in the
Mk 21 Spitfire was significantly redesigned. The leading
edge lost its curve, running straight out to the guns. Armament
was standardised at four 20mm Hispano Mk II cannon,
with 175 rounds for the inboard gun and 150 for the outboard
gun. In official documents this was referred to as the “new
shape wing”.

Care & Handling: Your precision-engineered scale model, as with any fine collector’s piece, should be handled with care. The operating parts are particularly delicate due to their precise scaling. When handling your model grasp it firmly by the body never picking up the model by the delicate parts. Keep your model in a safe place where it is not likely to roll or to be knocked to the floor. Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth. A cotton swap can be used to clean hard-to-reach places. Never use solvent cleaners.
