Description

AC057 Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 38-Victory ace Hans Dortenmann, 12./JG 54, Oldenberg, Germany, 1944. L=5.5", W=5.75" The Oxford 1:72 scale replica is as flown by Hans Dortenmann 12JG, Oldenburg in 1944. He was one of the highest scoring German WWII aces, credited with 38 victories on some 156 combat missions, 18 victories being accomplished flying the D-9 'Dora'. He was the most successful German pilot in this particular aircraft. As a result, during WWII service, he was decorated with the Iron Cross, German Cross in gold and finally the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Hans Dortenmann survived the war and died on 1st April 1973. Decorated in a green and brown camouflage scheme with light blue underbelly, our FW 190-D replica also features a yellow undernose panel and a yellow tail fin decorated with the Swastika. Additional markings include black and matt white bands circling the rear fuselage, black and white Luftwaffe crosses on both sides of the fuselage and lower wings, as well as white crosses on the upper wings. The interior and the wheel hubs are moulded green and the aircraft also features dark green propeller blades with black spinner. Rust brown exhaust pipes and matt black gun barrels complete this finely detailed model. Focke-Wulf Fw 190D Designed by Kurt Tank, the Fw-190A was first flown on June 1st, 1939. This small, yet ferociously-powered aircraft was fast and maneuverable and packed a fierce armament package earning it the nickname "Butcher Bird". The wide landing gear, excellent visibility and high-altitude paddle-bladed propeller endeared it to pilots familiar with the shortcomings of its predecessor - the Messerschmitt Bf 109. Some of the Luftwaffe's most famous fighter aces flew the Fw 190. Many variants were produced during the war, with the most notable being the inline-engine equipped and longer-nosed 190D, known as the "Dora."
